Dr Vikas Acharya - BMBS MA MBA FRCS(ORL-HNS) FHEA MAcadMEd MFSTEd

Welcome to my website, thank you for spending the time to have a look at it.

I am a substantive Consultant Rhinologist, Facial Plastic and ENT Surgeon working at The Royal National ENT and Eastman Dental Hospitals within UCLH in London. My higher surgical ENT training was within the North Thames London rotation and my Post-CCT fellowship in advanced Rhinology and Facial Plastic Surgery was at the Royal National ENT and Eastman Dental Hospitals also.

I have the absolute privilege of being clinical lead for community and peripheral ENT for The Royal National ENT and Eastman Dental Hospitals as part of UCLH.

I work alongside and support our colleagues in primary care with the management of ENT pathology in the community. By working towards a preventative healthcare model, I believe that providing the right diagnosis and treatment early on in a patients care pathway can help prevent disease progression and early surgery when appropriate, can improve outcomes long term.

Providing high quality, accessible and equitable diagnostics and care for all patients, including the most vulnerable in the community, will help reduce hospital interventions and requirements by expert assessment and treatment early on in ones care pathway.

Although I am interested in all aspects of rhinology, many of us have an extra sub-specialist interest within the breadth of Rhinology and Facial Plastic Surgery. I work with a fantastic team of rhinologists and our wider multi-disciplinary team colleagues to provide high quality, patient-centred and focused care. My main areas of clinical interest include, but are not limited to:
  • Blocked nose management - medical and surgical
  • Surgical management of Hereditary Haemorrhagic Telangiectasia
  • Complex nasal mucosal/sinus disease management (Including vasculitis/septal perforation management)
  • Medical rhinology
  • Facial function and reanimation surgery (Including botox/filler for facial weakness/palsy)
  • Endoscopic sinus surgery and CSF Leak repair
  • Awake/Local anaesthetic Nose/Sinus surgical procedures (Including Clarifix)
  • Smell and Taste loss management
I am a proud member of several multi-disciplinary teams, where collaboratively we aim to support and help manage highly complex diagnoses and conditions to help patient care pathways and treatment journeys. The main complex case MDTs I am a part of at UCLH are the joint medical-surgical rhinology team, facial function team/clinic, craniofacial team and the complex nasal vasculitis MDT.

At the Royal National ENT and Eastman Dental Hospitals (UCLH, London), we thrive on working together to help patients like this. If you’d like to refer these patients to me or our excellent rhinology team, please do email formal referrals to uclh.ent@nhs.net. Patients, your GP can refer you to us via the ERS referral system. We are very happy to take referrals from across the U.K. if it helps your services and patient care pathways.

I have a passion for medical and surgical education and often organise and teach on various healthcare courses for medical students, junior doctors, surgical trainees and various healthcare professionals. This was solidified and enhanced by my learning process when I completed a Masters in Medical Education part-time, whilst working as a foundation doctor. I am particularly interested in overcoming barriers to learning in the workplace, simulation, practical skills enhancement and improving confidence and competence of junior doctors. As such, I am a member of the academy of medical educators, a fellow of the higher education authority and a member of the faculty of surgical educators.

I am currently involved in a few ENT related organisations in various capacities:

They both have free educational resources, access to information and conferences/courses and is a good way to learn from about ENT and to start your stepping stone in planning a career in ENT, it's never too early!

One of my other interests is mentoring and coaching for those wishing to pursue a career in medicine, this includes those in secondary school and college, prior to applying to university. Particularly with personal statements and interview preparation. I also regularly help mentor foundation year doctors and junior surgical trainees with core and specialty applications, careers advice and extra-curricular and academic work to boost their portfolio, CV and interview preparation.

I'm always interested in connecting with new people within and outside ENT Surgery, especially if it's related to medical/surgical education, teaching, training or charity work. Please get in touch if you'd like to work together on a new or existing project! You can follow me on Twitter or Instagram by clicking the icon links at the bottom, but I can't promise it'll be anything interesting.
